7th Ward Residents Call on City to Address Dangerous Squatter Problems Promptly and Firmly

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Fire Department observed a house in the process of burning due to illegal electricity usage, likely by a squatter. Neighbors state that an individual lived there without permission.

House fires are a significant concern in New Orleans. Ruth Jordan, who lives nearby, noticed that lights remained on in the domicile located on the 2000 block of North Miro on multiple occasions.

The home, which had been vacant, had squatters living in it, according to Jordan. Fires sparked by illegal electricity setups in vacant homes have neighbors like Jordan and others demanding urgent city action.

A City Council spokesperson outlined plans to handle these properties in a recent statement. The approach focuses on collaboration with the fire department and other agencies. Council Deputy Joe Giarusso suggested resolving such issues with the assistance of law enforcement.

A nearby property owned by Sandra Hester had been damaged by the fire. Hester reported no maintenance on the squatted property. She reached out to city officials to take necessary measures against illegal squatting to prevent future situations.

Further investigations are underway to address this persistent issue in the 7th Ward.

The community urges faster responses and stricter enforcement to safeguard their neighborhoods from such hazards.
