Black History in the Making : Gian Durand and James Carter become the first African American Queen and King of the Krewe of Alla

In 1992, the Honorable Dorthy Mae Taylor valiantly led the enactment of a city council ordinance in the spirit of making the magic of Mardi Gras accessible to all, and now Gian Durand and James Carter are making history as the first African American Queen and King of the Krewe of Alla in its 93 year history! This marks a transformative moment in New Orleans’ rich Carnival tradition. Their leadership symbolizes progress and inclusivity, reflecting the evolving spirit of Mardi Gras.

This year, the Krewe of Alla adds another milestone to its legacy with a new parade night. In 2024, the New Orleans City Council granted Alla, with the advocacy of King James Carter and Queen Gian Duran, a parade permit for the first Wednesday of the main Carnival weekend, debuting on the iconic St. Charles Avenue route.

Known for its vibrant parades, colorful history, and deep commitment to community, the Krewe of Alla continues to be a treasured part of New Orleans’ cultural fabric. This season, their celebration promises to shine brighter than ever, blending tradition and innovation in a way only Mardi Gras can.

Do not miss this historic moment as Alla lights up Carnival in bold and brilliant style!
