Louisiana Schools to Remain Closed For Academic School Year Amid Coronavirus

During a press conference Governor John Bel Edwards order schools to remain closed

During a press conference Monday, Gov. John Bel Edwards said he will order public schools to remain closed for the rest of the academic year because of the coronavirus, leaving major challenges for state and local education leaders and nearly 720,000 students.

This decision means students will end the school year missing more than two months of traditional classroom instruction. Edwards emphasizes that students will not have to make up the missed time.

Now, school leaders are now faced with trying to assess where students stand academically, and how to address potential learning gaps.

While some schools have already begin incorporating next steps for this big change, other schools face a challenges without families having access one on one teacher-student interactions

Summer school or an early start to the school year were some possibilities mentioned by superintendents.
